FAQ

Common questions and answers about Timber & Tradition's products including cleaning, care and maintenance, and shipping.

General questions

Are your end grain cutting boards reversible?

Yes, the bottom side is of equal quality and finish as the top side. Note that all Timber & Tradition end grain cutting boards come standard with rubber feet, attached with non-rusting stainless steel screws, on the bottom side. This does not prohibit you from flipping the board over and cutting on the bottom side if you choose.

Why do you put feet on your end grain cutting boards and why no finger grooves?

After some trial and error along with customer feedback we arrived at the following facts:

  • Cutting board feet should be standard as they provide a non-slip grip that helps prevent the board from sliding around during use and reduces potential scratching of both the board and the countertop surface.
  • The cutting board feet raise the bottom surface off the countertop allowing air flow to all board surfaces helping to prevent uneven moisture accumulation in the board and accidental spills from soaking the bottom surface of the board helping to prevent damage to the cutting board.
  • Why no finger grooves? Some cutting board manufacturers rout grooves in the sides of their boards for finger tips to be placed when lifting/moving the board. We have found that the cutting board feet lift the bottom of the board off the countertop providing ample room for fingertips to simply be placed under the board to lift/move the board. This allows Timber & Tradition boards to retain the classic elegance of end grain butcher block without the unsightly grooves milled into the sides.
Can I order a board without feet and/or with finger grooves?

Absolutely. At Timber & Tradition we are happy to build a custom board that meets your needs and desires. Just reach out and let us know what you're interested in: Contact us

Cleaning & Maintenance

How do I clean my end grain cutting board?
  1. Hand Wash Only: Use warm water and a mild dish soap. Gently scrub the surface with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth.
  2. Rinse Thoroughly: Ensure all soap is rinsed off to avoid residue.
  3. Dry Immediately: Use a clean towel to pat the board dry and let it air dry standing upright or on its edge.
How do I maintain my cutting board?
  1. Oil Regularly: To keep your cutting board in top condition, apply food-grade mineral oil or a specialized cutting board oil every 2-4 weeks.
  2. Condition Occasionally: Use a cutting board conditioner containing beeswax for added protection and to help seal the wood. This can be done after oiling for a polished finish.
  3. Remove Stains and Odors: For stubborn stains, sprinkle coarse salt on the board and rub it with a halved lemon. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
What should I avoid doing to my end grain cutting board?
  • No Dishwashers: Never put your cutting board in the dishwasher. The heat and water exposure can warp or crack the wood.
  • No Soaking: Avoid submerging your board in water as this can lead to splitting and damage.
  • No Harsh Cleaners: Refrain from using bleach or strong chemical cleaners, as they can damage the wood’s surface and leave harmful residues.
  • No Extreme Heat: Keep the board away from direct heat sources such as stoves or radiators, which can cause the wood to dry out and crack.
  • Avoid Cutting Raw Meat Without Cleaning: Always sanitize your board thoroughly after cutting raw meat to prevent contamination.
